Wal-Mart Exceeds Compact Fluorescent Sales Goal
by Carlo Morelli
October 2, 2007: Today Wal-Mart announced that it had surpassed its goal of
selling 100,000,000 energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs in 2007. This is approximately
double its previous sales of the sustainability related environmentally
beneficial product. The 12-month goal was met 3 months early.
The company estimates that an average can save up to $350 per year by changing
the light bulbs in its house to compact flourescent type. Up to $30 of this cost
would be in electricity cost, the remainder evidently in bulb-replacement cost.
During Wal-Mart's 100 million bulb campaign, the states with the highest CFL sales
were Texas, Florida, California, Illinois and Ohio.
